The Price of Launching a New Product: Empirical Evidence on Factors Affecting the Relative Magnitude of Slotting Allowances

چکیده
Slotting allowances are a relatively recent trend, particular to the retail food industry. These allowances are lump-sum, up-front transfer payments from manufacturer to retailer when the manufacturer launches a new product. The practice has attracted some scrutiny because of uncertainty about its purposes and consequences. We draw from the extant literature to identify factors that potentially influence the relative magnitude of slotting allowances. Based on analysis of primary survey data from retailers and manufacturers, we observe that charging and paying of slotting allowances are affected by the relative strength of the players. Among retailers, the relative magnitude of slotting fees increases with retailers’ informational advantage over the manufacturer about the likely success of the new product, even when retailers recognize that the product is likely to be successful. Additionally, and consistent with the first finding, retailers with lower costs (i.e., potentially more efficient and powerful retailers) received higher slotting allowances. Furthermore, retailers charge higher slotting fees, even when concerns about manufacturers’ fulfilling postlaunch advertising commitments are minimal, implying that relatively powerless manufacturers are asked to provide credible commitments regarding postlaunch activities and are asked to pay relatively high slotting fees. Among manufacturers, the relative magnitude of slotting fees paid is lower for those who have a strong market share position. We discuss the theoretical, managerial, and public policy implications of our findings. (Slotting Allowances; Information Asymmetry; New Product Introductions; Retail Food Industry )

Are Slotting Allowances Efficiency-Enhancing or Anti-Competitive?
Slotting allowances are lump-sum payments by manufacturers to retailers for stocking new products. The economic rationale for slotting allowances is controversial. Several theoretical arguments have been provided for the use of slotting allowances. Some are based on efficiency considerations: (1) efficient allocation of scarce retail shelf space; (2) equitable allocation of new product failure ...
متن کاملSlotting Allowances and Price-Cost Margins: A Note
It has become common practice for retail grocers to charge grocery manufacturers a slotting allowance for placing products on the retail shelf. Manufacturers view the allowance as anti-competitive. Retailers view it as compensation for the risks associated with stocking new products. The largely theoretical literature on the subject is consistent with both views. This article proposes an empiri...

Slotting fees are fixed charges paid by food manufacturers to retailers for access to the retail market. The role of the practice and its effects on market efficiency are highly controversial. While the literature to date has largely focused on the effect of the practice on retail prices, it is also clear that slotting allowances have the potential to alter product variety in the market equilib...

In retail markets, slotting allowances have become a common practice, i.e. manufacturers pay lump-sum fees to retailers for initially stocking their products. However, the e ect of these payments on channel e ciency is still discussed controversially among practitioners and researchers. Due to severe data restrictions, substantial empirical research is rare, with the notable exceptions of Rao a...

This research examines the behavior of manufacturers and retailers in the presence of slotting allowances. Slotting allowances are fees manufacturers pay retailers to encourage them to carry a new product or allocate premium shelf space to a product. According to estimates, retailers collect billions of dollars in allowance payments annually. Using a four-stage game, I formulate a vertical stru...
